6 New Years Resolutions For Your HVAC System

Did you know, only 8% of American’s actually keep their New Years resolutions? At Downs Heating and Air Conditioning, we have made it easy for you to keep yours. Here are 6 resolutions you can make to improve the efficiency and performance of your heating and cooling system.

Change Your Air Filter

Changing your HVAC system’s air filter is one of the easiest and most economical tasks to do. Your air filters prevent dust, dirt, and other particles from entering your system, which ultimately prevents breakdowns. Replacing your air filter will not only improve the efficiency of your system, but it will improve the quality of your indoor air. During the more active summer and winter months, you should change your air filter monthly. Once the active months have passed, you could possibly stretch the air filter for two months, but we advise that you follow the recommendations on the air filter itself.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance

Another smart resolution would be to start scheduling annual maintenance checks. Ideally, these tune-ups would be scheduled once in the fall and once in the spring. This will allow you to find out if there is an issue with your system before you really need it for the hotter and colder months. No matter the age of your HVAC system, an annual maintenance checkup can keep it running smoothly and extend its lifespan. Do yourself (and your unit) a favor and have our HVAC service contractors take care of it.

Invest In a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats have a ton of benefits.  With one of these devices, you can preprogram your heating and cooling schedule, which can save you up to $180 per year in utility costs. This is possible by automatically adjusting the temperature of your home to keep it comfortable while being efficient. Another great feature of a smart thermostat is it can track your energy usage so that you can identify easy ways to make your household more environmentally friendly. Smart thermostats also link to your home’s WiFi network, which allows you to adjust the temperature of your home from your smartphone.

Increase Ventilation

This year you may want to look into tightening your homes building envelope. Sealing air leaks and insulating your attic foundation can help with energy consumption. Also, unblock all vents by checking to make sure vents and furniture or other objects do not block air returns.

Schedule a Duct Cleaning

While your HVAC unit does most of the work to heat or cool your home, do not forget that your air ducts are part of the picture. Dirty air ducts mean dirty air. It also decreases the efficiency of your HVAC system. Schedule an air duct cleaning to keep your family healthy and HVAC unit happy.

Research Solar Panel Energy Systems

Solar panels are an all-around great solution. You will benefit from a system with zero environmental emissions while receiving tax credits from the IRS. Solar panels also increase the value of your home or business.

All of these suggested resolutions are a great start to extend the lifespan of your system. At Downs Heating and Air Conditioning, we are more than happy to help you get started. From everyone at Downs Heating and Air Conditioning, Happy New Year!
